Why Color Correct Your Footage?
Ensure key elements in your project look the way they should:
Every scene of your project has elements that are the main focus of the audience. In a narrative or documentary film, the focus is most likely on the people in the shot. In a commercial, the primary element is probably a product, such as the label of a package or the detail of a watch. Regardless of what the most important elements are, most likely you and your audience will have expectations of what they are supposed to look like. In this case, color correction is used to reproduce the colors of what was originally shot in the project itself.
Match shots in a scene:
Most edited programs utilize footage from a number of sources, shot in multiple locations over the duration of the production. Even with the most skilled lighting and camera crews, subtle differences in color and exposure will occur, often within clips meant to be edited into a single scene. When edited together, even minor differences in color and lighting can make individual shots stand out, so the scene appears uneven. With precise color correction, all of the different clips that make up a specific scene can be balanced to match so when viewed it appears as though they are happening at the same time and in the same place, under the same lighting conditions.
Correct innacuracies in color balance and exposure:
Missteps can happen on any shoot. For example, a camera operator may have forgotten to white balance the video camera before shooting an interview in a location lit with fluorescent lights, producing footage with a greenish tinge. Color correction allows you to fix these kinds of mistakes. In many cases, such problems can certainly be minimized, if not eliminated, through the careful application of color correction.
Achieve a particular “look”:
The purpose of color correction is not simply one of ensuring all the video in your piece matches some objective model of white, black, and realistic color tones. Color is a property that, when carefully mixed, can result in an extension of dramatic control over the look of a project. Color correction allows for the ability to control whether your video has rich, saturated colors or a more subdued look. Warmer looks can be created by pushing their tones into the reds, or a cooler look can be achieved by bringing them into the blues. The amount of contrast can be decreased, pulling details out of the shadows, or increased for a harsher look. Such subtle modifications in the image can alter the audience’s perception of the scene being played, changing the overall mood of your program.
Create contrast or special effects:
Color correction is also used to create contrast between two scenes for a more jarring effect. Imagine cutting from the reds and yellows in a harsh, desert landscape, to the lush blues and greens in a lush jungle scene. Utilizing color correction for this purpose, you can subtly accentuate these differences. Color grading is also used create more extreme effects, such as strongly manipulating colors and exposure to create a day-for-night look. It is even possible to selectively target a narrow range of colors to alter or replace only those specific color values, and for example, turning a blue car red.
